On 7 December 42 A Browning Chronology she speaks of herself, too, as writing ‘from riddledom’ and on 5 November, defending herself and RB, tells MRM that great writers from Aeschylus and Pindar to Wordsworth and Coleridge have been ‘obscure by the nature of the thought’ where lesser writers have been ‘obscure through imperfection of the expression’. November EBB’s ‘The Cry of the Human’ (revised for 1844) is published in The Boston Miscellany of Literature and Fashion. 25 (Fri) Dickens sends Forster his verdict on A Blot: ‘It is full of genius, natural and great thoughts, profound, and yet simple and beautiful in its vigour … And I swear that it is a tragedy that MUST be played … And if you tell Browning that I have seen it, tell him that I believe … that there is no man living (and not many dead) who could produce such a work’.

Chris Dowson’s kind words on the poem show that ‘after all, writing unintelligible metaphysics, is not voted as bad as murder ’. 24 Probable date of EBB’s ‘Lessons from the Gorse’ (see 23 October 1841).
